Out of Town
I am currently out of town on a mini vacation with my family; long over due. I'll keep in touch as often as possible, or when the business center at the hotel is not busy, as I did not bring my computer. Going back to my room so we'll catch you later.

Whiny Privates (Click for story)
Ok, how many thought of Army privates and how many thought of other privates? Be honest! I've read this story in 2 places and now you get the real truth, unlike in the original story. Whiny Privates, that's what these soldiers are, period. When I was going through basic training a "Pro" wrestling crew came in for entertainment. Those who didn't want to go were on lockdown in the barracks. It's not like you get an option to do what you want if you don't decide to go to the entertainment offered. This concert was offered because it was there and these Privates didn't want to go, which is fine. But being on lockdown is not punishment, it's THE OTHER option; know what I mean? They don't get to do what they want or something else if they don't want to go. They are in training, choice and options are not available for your own choosing, they are available only if the trainees give them. They are whiny privates. I don't like "pro" wrestling but I went, had pizza and pop and cared little for the entertainment. I was just out of the barracks and not training!

Really? Really? What the.....? (Click for Article)
4 years ago my wife and I went through the process of adopting our beautiful little girl. We had to fill out mountains of paperwork; go through a financial check, background criminal check, pay over $20,000, and after one year stand before a judge who decided we were fit parents and able to fully adopt Hava.
Behold James and Anne Cardona of Marietta, Georgia. They have 2 precious girls and proceeded to treat them worse than caged pets. One is 5 years old weighing 160 pounds with rotting teeth and covered in bug bites. (The house was full of cockroaches, flees, and "gigantic" spiders.) Her younger sister, 4, when found was wearing only a urine soaked diaper also full of bug bites.
If you have ever seen the movie "Idiocracy" I can only picture the apartment where Frito lives.
Now I'm definitely not advocating the state getting involved with people having kids like they do when people want to adopt but come on. Put my wife and I through scrutiny paying out 20 grand and having to go to court to be deemed good enough parents while a couple like this has kids. Thankfully they were caught and put in jail and should stay in jail for a long time. Unfortunately these 2 precious little girls are scarred for life and have a long road ahead of them starting with foster care. God I pray their foster parents treat them with respect and with lots of love.

The Amber Alert: Click on Title for Article
The Amber Alert, which alerts us to child abductions, is named after a child abducted 15 years ago in Alma, Arkansas. She was abducted while playing with other children in the parking lot of a little league game. Her name is, Morgan Nick.
A composite sketch of a suspect came out depicting a man about 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds with a scruffy beard and salt and pepper hair. He was driving a red pickup truck. It is reported he was talking to Morgan during the game.
Where to begin with this? A stranger with nothing but his own selfishness and desire, thinking nothing but about himself, takes a child. Takes a child from her mother, family, friends, home, school, Girl Scout troop, etc.
I don’t understand this. We can talk theology, Satan, and sin as much and as long as possible but there will never be a full understanding of why people do this sort of crime. There is no excuse on earth to justify the taking of a child let alone any human being.
I talked at length with a gentlemen who said he is a Deist and that someday humanity will be enlightened to the point nothing like this will happen. All of humanity someday will act the same and be the same looking out for the betterment of each other; like a light switch will go on and the whole world will become one. To me, that sounds harder to believe than believing in God knowing we cannot ever become Him or become what this gentlemen described.
The answer is, sin, but that’s a crutch, a fall back. What this guy did in taking, stealing, forcibly removing, someone from their home is show us that humanity will never have a light go on at the same time where all work and play together with happy smiles and sunshine with colorful butterflies.
I pray he is found and I pray Morgan is fine. I pray for her mother, family, and friends that they never give up hope. I pray before people ever do something like this again they look up and cry out to God for help.

High Speed Trains: Click on Title for article
High Speed Trains in the U.S.A., it’s about time. (I thought of using asterisk before the word ‘time’ but decided to keep it G.) After living in Russia, Ukraine, and Germany for lengthy periods of time please hurry with the public transportation between many more towns, cities, and states. It’s been nice to see the Light Rail used here in Minnesota but if I want to take public transportation to work I still need to take 2 buses and the light rail for more than an hour; or, 20 minutes by my car. Hmmmm, I take my car every time. But I would take public transportation every time possible if it actually got up to speed with places like, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany.
Yes, living in St. Petersburg, Russia and Sevastopol, Ukraine, the public transportation was EXCELLENT. I could get anywhere in the city in a decent time without using my car. Please bring us more public transportation so I don’t need to use my car and get mad at stupid drivers every day not knowing how to drive or obey simple road rules.
One of my favorite songs I ever wrote was about a train trip, titled 'Train Trips'. It was 3 days from St. Petersburg, Russia to Frankfurt, Germany. Saw a lot of countryside and met a lot of nice people.

Letter of the Law VS Spirit of the Law
It is Friday, August 13th, 2010 and by 10 p.m. I will be at Camp Ripley for my second to the last weekend of Army National Guard Drill. On September 26th, 2 weeks after my last drill September 11-12, I will officially be out of the military entirely after 11 years of military service. I will be straight forward with this comment and with my thoughts.
The Army will lose what would have been a very good, yes, very good chaplain. “The Law” for active duty military I fought against, and lost, for over a year is: Those wanting to be an active duty military chaplain first must have served 2 years in a full time ministry position. What about someone who served 10 years in the military like myself? It doesn’t count!
So instead of the Army accepting someone who knows what to do in the military with 9 years of enlisted service and 2 years as an officer; has been to war in Iraq informally counseling many soldiers of all faiths so will therefore do the same as a chaplain going outside the wire whenever needed; started and led Bible Studies with soldiers of all faiths; informally counseled soldiers of all faiths at 2 in the morning when they knocked on my door in the barracks, not the chaplain’s door; spent 2 years in Ukraine before the Army preaching in Russian and leading Bible Studies; and has played guitar leading worship for Army chapel services for 3 years in Germany and Iraq; etc…..
The Active Army wants someone who has preached the litmus test of sermons but knows nothing of the military; knows nothing of what it means to work for the government having to balance the “God and Country” role as a chaplain serving everyone from Pentecostal Christians to Southern Baptist Christians to Hindus to Muslims to Jews.
So, I joined the Guard to become a chaplain and find work in a church but soon discovered that churches don’t want to hire those in the military, with understanding. I had someone say to me, “I have 19 applying to this position and you’re the only one with a conflict of being in the Guard. If I hire you to be our youth pastor you could be deployed at any time for a year or more leaving us with no youth pastor again. The other 18 don’t have that.” I can’t argue with someone looking for continuity in his church, especially for youth.
So, I resigned my commission and on September 26th, 2010, I will be out of the Army entirely and the Army will lose what would have been a Great Chaplain! Letter of the Law controls the Spirit of the Law at the Army’s loss!

Religion is the opiate of the masses!
"Religion is the opiate of the people/masses" declared Karl Marx which arguably spelled the doom of communism before he even finished his thoughts and people put them into practice. Wow, after a day of hearing people's reactions about the health care bill on t.v., at work, and hearing what some politicians are saying it has almost turned into a religious ordeal. One person I know against it said it was unbiblical and there's nothing in the Bible to support it. Another person at my work, likening the passing of the bill to a further step towards socialism or communism, said those were ungodly. And yet others argue that a democracy and capitalism is Godly while anything looking like Socialism or Communism is of the devil. To those who believe this way I have to ask:
1. Please show me in the Bible where God condones freedom of religion because mine says "you shall not worship any other God but me."
2. Please show me in the Bible where God condones freedom of speech because in mine it says to keep away from unwholesome talk and rather all things said should be towards the edification of others to God.
3. Please show me in the Bible where God condones Capitalism because in mine there is plenty of talk against being greedy and making your life mission seeking after money and possessions.
Religion should not even be in discussion here. To use the Bible as a political know how book because it may mention something about government is like someone using Karl Marx in defining God because it mentions God; albeit in a bad way. The Bible is not a "how to run a government and political system" book, it is about God and His relationship with people throughout time culminating to His Son Jesus Christ dying on the cross for our sins, resurrecting from the grave overcoming death so that we may not feel death. It is not a book on how to run a government. Socialism and Communism are un-American, and un-USA - if that is a phrase. They are not more unbiblical than democracy and capitalism. Both are truly unbiblical because if you want to be biblical you need to have a theocracy with Christ as King and ruler of all. Until America votes for that to happen, no matter what form of government we have, it will fail because it is based on people's beliefs and we're all different and want different things. I am American and would argue having freedom of religion and speech over the main stays of Communist USSR, which was freedom to have a job and free health care. Many people I know there still would rather have that than the American version of freedom. Anyway, I'm done. Just please keep Jesus Christ and God out of this political mess!!!!!

Health Care; taxes and burden
Has anyone else been watching the Dems and Reps say their bit over the Health Care Bill today and this evening, I have. Thanks, C-SPAN. In different words both sides have been saying the same Dem or Rep line; health care for those who can't have or afford it right now VS. it'll cost taxpayers a lot of money over time.... You can guess which side says what.
I have voted Republican in every presidential election since 1988 until this last one but no, I did not vote for Obama either; thank you 3rd party. I have not read or even tried to read the entire Health Care Bill to know exactly what is there but the thing that irritates me most comes from the Republicans, "it'll cost the taxpayers money" and "bring the debt up even more". My response, "didn't you, Republicans, under Bush, who I voted for twice, have 8 years to work on health care and do absolutely nothing about it? Did you not vote for 2 wars, which has placed a huge financial burden on my son who is only 2 years old because he will be the one trying to figure out how to pay for it?" How can the Republicans use the excuse of "too much money" and "tax payer burden" when that's all they did with 2 wars during their 8 year tenure? I believe one war may be argued justifiable while the other I would not. This Health Care Bill may be a pipe dream and may turn out bad for us and the economy; but with 2 wars with no end in sight for either one of them and both of them draining our funds so there is no money to use on people in the U.S.A. solely on the REPUBLICAN shoulders of Congress, they need to shut up about taxpayer burden and inflated debt!!!!!

The Hurt Locker
I finally watched The Hurt Locker. I can't say much about EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) other than I was stationed along side them in Iraq at Camp Victory where the movie took place. When we all first arrived in Baghdad the base was big enough for them to bring back ordnance and blow it up in the back half of the area. There's no way in the world I would want to be a bomb tech, I like being alive and getting my adrenaline rush in more adventurous ways like jumping out of an airplane or seeing new lands. There is one thing I did not think the movie did justice and needed more content; when bomb tech, SSG William James, was home it didn't go into what his mind was thinking, what life was like. It alluded to what was going on when he was in the grocery store, pulling leaves from the roof and talking to his son but I wish it would have brought it out into the open more as part of the movie. War is a drug. That phrase started the movie and in many respects it is very true. I would argue it is not war itself but what one does during a time of war. I know of many soldiers who extend or request to go back to Iraq or Afghanistan, we call them war junkies. But coming from my own experience, talking to many of those soldiers coming and going, and working next to many war vets at the V.A. now, war is not the drug, it is our role during war. Many of us did things that had life or death consequences, sat in meetings deciding missions, and went on convoys for those missions. Coming back and having to decide what kind of cereal to buy or picking leaves off the house seems trivial and unrewarding. Those of us at the VA who did those things above now sit in a cubicle processing paperwork bored out of our minds every day. I totally understand why the good SSG wanted to go back and keep doing the bomb thing over and over again. Though he is home with his family and friends he is alone in his thoughts. He is struggling with feeling important in his work as a bomb tech and being home with his family doing "trivial" things. It's like a chaplain in the guard once commented after returning from a year in Kosovo. "I met and worked with the church leaders for the Serbs and the Muslim Imams for the Kosovars to keep them from killing each other. I then return home and attend my first church meeting where the congregation is arguing over having either blue or red carpet in the sanctuary." Trivial!!!!! I wish The Hurt Locker would have discussed his actions at home more explicitly where everyone would have understood what was going on in his mind. I wish it would have been more about the movie than making it look like he wanted to abandon his family again for war in the end. I am not a war junkie and war is not my drug..... but doing what I did there and doing what I do now has no comparison. If it wasn't for my wonderful wife and 2 kids I would be volunteering to go back to Iraq and to Afghanistan as much as possible.

The Paranormal
So, since I haven't been feeling well I've been watching a lot of t.v. I wouldn't normally watch. I just watched a show about students at Penn State and the "Paranormal Research Society". Has anyone seen it or heard of it? I saw a couple episodes talking about dark figures darker than night, one had a ram's head, haunting people at night and the ram's head one talking to people. To anybody I know in computer world, has anything like this happened to you? I haven't seen the ram's head "guy" but I have been "visited" on a few occasions by the darker than pitch black night figure standing over me where the only thing I can move are my eyes; something similar to Jean-Dominique Bauby's description of what he had, locked in syndrome. (I recommend reading his book btw, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.) I couldn't move any part of my body but my eyes could follow this dark figure come over to me, bend down, and walk by me. One time I woke up and the walls were swaying back and forth, outside I could see a severe lightning storm in the window, and the dark figure walked the entire length of my bed side staring at me. I was trying to yell out the name "Jesus" but could not until he left and the room went calm. I have another "dream" involving lizard type creatures with red glowing eyes, 3 "fingered" claws, which were very sharp, chasing me through a forest, which had been badly burned. It was the middle of the night as I was running through this burnt forest with smoke rising from the ground and these creatures chasing me. I woke up the next morning with 3 scratch marks going down my back and 3 going down my left arm. Anyway, not to scare anyone but has anyone been through something similar?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary

Prayer request
For some reason my work computer is not letting me write in comments. The Munson household is sick.... Heidi still has mono and I woke up this morn with a low grade fever, sore throat, and the body aches but I still went to work.... I know, dumb idea. Heidi's mom comes in today from Seattle to help out with the kiddies so hopefully Heidi and I both can get some much needed rest. Your prayers are appreciated. Thanks

What is prayer to you?
I've been thinking of this often as I pray more and more every day now for your requests and concerns. Jesus talks about prayer in the Bible and prays himself a lot, so what is it? I've heard it is "talking to God" but than how do you "have" to be to talk to God? Do you have to be on your knees, folding hands, eyes closed? Can I meditate on God at my desk doing work every day? I believe one can meditate at work and pray while doing work without having to go through the usual prayer motions described above. But there is a time and place for bowing, folding hands, and coming humbly before God with our thoughts and concerns. My wife and I have been reciting "The Lord's Prayer" and the "Shema" with the kids every night because it gives a great description of what prayer looks like. But what does it mean to you? What is the purpose you have when you pray? To me, it is telling God what is on my mind willingly placing every concern and care I have before Him even though He already knows what is needed. Does that make sense? I acknowledge God is God, is creator of heaven and earth: Baruch eta Adonai, eloheinu melech haolam; pray for my friends and my enemies a blessing from God, which would be knowing and trusting in Him. Anyway, what are your thoughts on prayer?

Prayer Requests for Saturday
I'm getting this out late with kids, church, and Army drill taking up most of the day thus far. Drill is always interesting as I am getting out soon so there is not much I do anymore. To tell you the truth, I am still "bitter" at the chaplaincy for not accepting me to go active duty because I lack 2 years of full time ministry in a church; when I do have 10.5 years of military service, 2 years of missionary work in Ukraine, and led worship for 2 years for chapel services in the Army. None of that counts towards going back onto active duty????? Anyway, after working with chaplains on active duty who did little when it came to ministry I do not feel sorry for the military's need for chaplains...... Pray my heart changes to one of forgiveness and prayer for the military chaplaincy.
Thanks
